Members of the Canadian government are leading discussions with their Moroccan counterparts to identify whether a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) could be established between the two countries.
Canada's Agriculture Minister, Gerry Ritz, has met with Morocco's Agriculture Minister, Aziz Akhenouch, and Trade Minister Abdellatif Mazouz in Morocco to pinpoint specific areas within their current economic partnership which could be boosted by the implementation of an FTA.
According to the Canadian Federation of Agriculture and the Canadian Wheat Board (CWB), stronger trade ties have long been sought after by Canadian grain and pulse producers. At present, Canada is Morocco's biggest supplier of durum wheat, with 90% of the product supplied to Morocco by the CWB.
In 2008 trade between the two countries amounted to around USD450m (GBP308m); the majority of which was derived from the agricultural industries.
