Five Californian counties and two cities on Friday filed a class action suit in San Francisco's Superior Court requesting a payout from the firm similar to that awarded in a consumer action early last year.
The January 2003 award, which received final approval in July of this year, gave California residents who had purchased Microsoft products between 1995 and 2001 the chance to claim a share of $1.1 billion in computer vouchers.
However, it later emerged that local government bodies and public entities were not entitled to a portion of the settlement, a state of affairs which led to the filing of a separate action last week.
Speaking to the US media, special assistant county counsel for the county of Santa Clara revealed that the local governments are unlikely to be satisfied with vouchers, explaining that:
"We're looking for damages. We're looking for money."
The class action could potentially encompass every city, county and town in California, in addition to the state's courts, state offices, school districts and public utilities.
