The CSFB/Tremont Hedge Fund Index was up 0.76% in August, it emerged this week. This brings the index's year-to-date returns to 8.85%.
Speaking with regard to last month's gains, Oliver Schupp, President of Credit Suisse First Boston Tremont Index LLC announced that: 'Equity-oriented hedge fund strategies enjoyed generally a positive month amidst further optimism on accelerating economic growth.'
This was supported by Robert I. Schulman, Co-Chief Executive Officer of Tremont Capital Management, Inc, who revealed that:
'Emerging markets funds took the lead among the strategies, posting a 2.98% return. Now up 17.07% for the year, emerging markets funds have provided important diversification to sophisticated investors.'
The Global Macro and Risk Arbitrage sub indices also performed well in August, bringing in returns of 1.30% and 1.16% respectively.
