The Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) announced this week that from Tuesday, Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) applications entering the National phase will be processed solely by the PCT section.
Previously, PCT applications were processed by two different sections; the PCT National section and the Formalities section.
The new process will improve communication between clients and the Patent Office, and will decrease delays in processing new applications, CIPO explained.
In order to maximize efficiencies, the Patent Office asked that, for each correspondence filed after a Canadian application number has been assigned, the client include on his or her covering letter if it is a PCT application or a Regular Canadian application.
