Talks have begun between the UK's Chartered Institute of Patent Agents and the Institute of Trademark Attorneys over merging their regulatory functions.
Following the publication last December of the Clementi Report on reforming legal services, the Department for Constitutional Affairs issued a White Paper entitled: 'The Future of Legal Services: Putting Consumers First'.
The White Paper proposes major changes in the way that legal services are provided and in the way that the providers of such services are regulated. Currently, the CIPA and the ITMA both represent and regulate their members.
Responses to the White Paper are required by 20 January, and it is intended that a Bill will be announced in the Queen’s Speech next autumn.
Speaking to the MIP Week news service, CIPA president Bruce Alexander explained that:
"A full merger of CIPA and ITMA is not likely immediately, but we are having on-going and active discussions to set up a joint regulatory body."
