The Canadian Minister of National Revenue, Elinor Caplan, has reassured taxpayers this week that the Customs and Revenue Agency will take a lenient attitude towards those who have been unable to fulfil their tax obligations as a result of contracting the SARS virus, or whose businesses have been affected by illness or quarantine.
"The Government is sensitive to the impact SARS is having on some individuals and small businesses. Those suffering from SARS or who are under quarantine should first deal with their immediate problems and then deal with tax deadlines and tax payment issues," the minister said in a recent statement.
Caplan said the Revenue Agency intends to apply the principles of the fairness provision, which gives the agency the flexibility to apply a common sense approach in cases where tax payers default due to extenuating circumstances.
The CCRA deals with such occurrences on a case by case basis and requires the individual to inform them in writing the reason for the delay in payment or filing. The agency may then decide to extend due dates, offer flexible payment schedules or waive interest and penalty charges.
