The director-general of the UK's Confederation of British Industry, Sir Digby Jones has condemned the level of scrutiny received by European laws before they are implemented on a national level.
In a pamphlet recently published by the Foreign Policy Centre, he suggested that: "Measures that will affect millions of people and cost millions of pounds pass through UK formalities, en route to being implemented into UK law, while barely causing a ripple."
He called on politicians to pay more attention to EU directives at an earlier stage, in order to head off legislation likely to adversely affect the United Kingdom.
The CBI chief also called for increased transparency of the scrutiny process, and more hearings of expert witnesses by designated committees.
