Speaking at the recent international symposium of the Birmingham Law Society, head of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), Digby Jones urged greater flexibility with regard to European Union employment laws if the EU is to compete with emerging world economies.
According to a Law Gazette report, Mr Jones suggested that the Working Time Directive was damaging European businesses, and observed that with expansion of the EU mere months away, the European bloc appears to be "valiantly marching forward to the ideology of the 1970s" when it comes to employment law.
He went on to add that: "We have to pursue the ideal of flexibility and choice in the workplace if we want to be competitive with India, China and the US."
