Giving his closing address at the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) annual conference last week, Digby Jones, who heads the organisation, criticised as "inappropriate and damaging" proposed EU legislation on the consultation of workers during cross-border mergers.
Under the terms of the planned directive, the merging companies would be required to adopt whichever is the more stringent consultation procedure in their home countries. Mr Jones warned that this could lead to employee representatives being able to veto management decisions on UK company boards.
He observed that:
"This latest proposal on cross-border mergers is a classic example of how the European Commission fails to understand how business operates in the 21st century globalised economy. It will prevent managers structuring organisations in the best way for the business. And here we go again: rules that show Brussels is simply not in touch with the way the world has changed."
