It emerged recently that the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has requested a formal update on the status of the official Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) talks, which have been in a hiatus since February.
In a statement issued late last month, it was announced that CARICOM ministerial spokesman for the FTAA negotiations, K D Knight had contacted the co-chairs of the talks, US Trade Representative, Robert Zoellick and Brazilian Foreign Minister, Celso Amorim for a formal assessment of the status of the negotiations.
According to a Nassau Guardian report on the matter, since the inconclusive ending of talks between trade vice ministers at the seventeenth meeting of the FTAA Trade Negotiations Committee (TNC) earlier this year, only informal talks between the Committee's co-chairs have taken place.
