A survey of businesses in the Channel Islands has shown that firms there spend on average 50% more on IT than in the UK, according to a report in the Guernsey Press and Star.
The survey, which was conducted jointly by accounting firm KPMG and computer services company Itex revealed that the average spend on IT systems was £4,500 per employee in Guernsey, compared with just £3,000 in the UK.
The findings were welcomed by the Board of Industry's e-business director Kevin Green, who said that it showed that business in Guernsey is actively trying to be more competitive and generally reflected the e-business team's strategies.
However, the response to the questionnaire was not extensive, and only about 30% of those who were invited to take part replied. Therefore, the results may show a slightly distorted picture. Of the 104 organisations which responded, 57% were from the financial/legal services area, 19% were from government and public services, and there were no replies from the manufacturing or construction sector. The findings also revealed that firms in the financial sector spent the most on IT per employee. However, given the Channel Island's bias towards the financial services sector, the results may not show a true comparison with other countries such as the UK.
Nevertheless, the survey did show that the IT spending was set to increase 3% in the Channel Islands, which is also higher than the projection for the UK.
Another area brought to light by the poll was the breakdown of average IT costs within firms. This showed that the largest proportion was spent on staff training, at 38% of costs. New hardware accounted for 26%, whilst new application systems took up 21% of IT budgets.
The survey also highlighted a certain lack of foresight when it came to the planning of IT projects. Many firms failed to monitor the effects of their decision making on such issues, Dr Elaine Monkhouse of KPMG told the Guernsey Press.
