Bermuda-based First Atlantic Commerce Ltd (FAC), a leading international, online multi-currency payment gateway, has announced that it has been “business as usual” on the island, despite Bill, a Category Three hurricane, passing 166 nautical miles west-southwest of the island.
Hurricane Bill churned past Bermuda early on the morning of August 22, leaving behind stormy sea conditions, debris and some flooding, but no major structural damage. Up to 3,700 homes across the island lost power during the storm, caused by debris falling onto wires and winds blowing out switches. Electricity across the island has now been restored, roads have been cleared of debris, and the island is operating as normal.
FAC’s payment gateway platform is hosted at the Cable and Wireless facility, which maintains independent power supply and is a world-class hurricane proof facility. As anticipated, there was no impact to FAC’s payment systems during the storm, and FAC continued to offer payment-processing services to Internet-based customers around the globe.
“As in the past with other hurricanes impacting the island, FAC was able to continue processing without interruption. This is a testament to FAC’s team, its skills and forward planning, our telecommunications infrastructure, processing network and service reliance,” said FAC’s CEO, Andrea Wilson.
The Atlantic Hurricane Season runs from June 1 to November 30.
