A top US Treasury official has indicated that President Bush’s future tax reforms remain in their early stages of development, and the administration’s options remain very much open at the present time.
Addressing a forum sponsored by accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers, acting assistant secretary for tax policy Greg Jenner attempted to deflect speculation that the White House is exploring only a flat tax or national sales tax.
"That is not necessarily the case," he declared.
"All options are on the table," he added.
Meanwhile, former House Ways and Means Chairman Bill Archer told the gathering that the reforms are likely to be far from radical, and will be undertaken in an incremental fashion towards the achievement of “an ultimate goal.”
Archer predicted that even then, the reforms are unlikely to begin before 2006.
