It emerged this week that President Bush has placed a stop order on the final approval of the proposed '.xxx' top level domain, which was expected to be granted on Tuesday.
The concept of a new 'adult' domain was approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) in June, but, spurred by Christian conservative groups, large numbers of US citizens have written to the Commerce Department to protest the creation of the new domain.
In a letter made public earlier this week, the Department's Assistant Secretary, Michael Gallagher explained that:
"The Department of Commerce has received nearly 6,000 letters and e-mails from individuals expressing concern about the impact of pornography on families and children."
Supporters of the proposed domain argue that it would make it easier to contain adult material, preventing children from stumbling across it accidentally. However, conservative Christian organisations such as the Family Research Council fear that US homes will be "flooded" with pornography if the designated '.xxx' suffix is introduced.
