Three bidders in Hong Kong have successfully bid for a total of 90MHz of radio spectrum in the 2.5GHz band at a total spectrum utilization fee of HKD1.5bn (USD193m), the country's Office of the Telecommunications Authority has reported.

The successful bidders are Genius Brand, CSL, and China Mobile Hong Kong.

The successful bidders can deploy the next generation of broadband wireless access technologies and offer a variety of advanced high-speed multimedia services. This should create a lot of opportunities for both network operators and providers of content and service applications, the authority said.

It will issue the broadband wireless access licences upon receipt of the spectrum utilization fee and the performance bond from the successful bidders.

This was the first time that the government deployed an Internet-based software platform for auctioning radio spectrum. With the participation of five bidders, the authority went through a total of 56 rounds of bidding over nine business days.
