In a recent interview with the Italian media, entrepreneur Richard Branson revealed that he plans to bring antitrust complaints to the national and European authorities over the structure of the Italian mobile telecommunications market.
Speaking to Il Sole 24 Ore this week, Mr Branson explained that new and overseas operators are unable to enter the market without first making a deal with an existing telecoms firm, a situation which he feels represents a breach of Europe's antitrust laws.
The prominent UK businessman also took aim at Alitalia SpA, which he alleged has abused its dominant position in the airline business to block entry to the market by new carriers. He went on to reveal that he hopes to invest more in Italy via his Virgin Airlines operation.
