Former German tennis star, Boris Becker is to stand trial for tax evasion next month, according to reports in the German media last week.
It has been alleged that he misled the German tax authorities during the early 1990s, claiming to be resident in the low tax jurisdiction of Monaco, whilst actually living in Munich. The three-times Wimbledon champion stands accused of evading 3.08 million Deutsche Marks ($1.51 million), although if the court finds against him, he may end up forking out some 13 million marks in back taxes.
Earlier this year it was widely reported - and subsequently denied by the Munich court in question - that a deal had been reached, whereby Becker would be obliged to pay 6.5 million euros to the Munich tax authorities, in return for which he would receive a two-year suspended sentence.
According to German daily, Sueddeutsche Zeitung, the trial is set to commence on October 23, and will last at least three days.
