Speaking earlier this week, EU Internal Market Commissioner, Frits Bolkestein revealed that he will not be supporting the Franco-German campaign to harmonise corporate tax levels in the European Union.
Suggesting that such a move could reduce competition in the newly enlarged EU, Bolkestein argued that:
"It is not the task of the European Commission to tell the governments what the level of corporate tax should be."
He went on to add:
"What the commission wants is that Lithuania and other new EU members develop as soon as possible."
