Cayman Islands boat operators are being urged to check their safety equipment in the run-up to spot checks due to begin at the end of this month.
During the week commencing March 31st, the joint Customs and Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) Marine Unit, in partnership with the Port Authority of the Cayman Islands, will be conducting safety inspections of commercial vessels.
"It is extremely important that vessels carry the necessary safety gear," explained Inspector Brad Ebanks.
"In the event of an emergency, having the correct equipment can save lives," he added.
A checklist of requirements is available from the Port Authority’s offices, as well as from the Customs Office, so operators can ensure that vessels are properly equipped in line with the law.
Dive boat operators are reminded of the additional requirements to carry a dive-flag for daytime dives and a light for night dives, as well as a having an onboard lookout while a dive is in progress.
All vessels should have first aid equipment appropriate for their type of operations and lifejackets.
The Marine Unit and the Port Authority expressed appreciation for the cooperation of operators in maintaining vessel safety.
