According to reports in the UK media this week, Prime Minister Tony Blair has made limiting the powers of the European Court of Justice to intefere in the national tax matters of member states a priority for the country's time as president of the European Union.
However, it has been suggested that this goal is unlikely to be achieved, at least in part due to the need for unanimous support of the initiative for it to pass.
Speaking to the Guardian with regard to the reports, an unnamed senior EC official observed that:
"The ECJ exists to implement European law across the Union. I don't think we would ever support an attempt to hinder its ability to do that."
