It emerged on Tuesday that the creator of the BitTorrent downloading service, Bram Cohen has reached an agreement with the US Motion Picture Association in the anti-piracy dispute between the two parties.
BitTorrent's decentralized structure enhances download speeds for films and makes it more difficult to trace copyright infringers, both of which have made it a popular resource for movie pirates.
According to an Associated Press report, under the terms of the agreement, Mr Cohen will prevent his website from locating pirated copies of new release movies.
Observers have suggested that the move, set to be officially announced by the MPAA in the near future, is likely to make Mr Cohen a more attractive prospect for movie studios seeking to facilitate legitimate downloads in the future.
