The Guernsey Press and Star reported on Wednesday that an article carried by the Sunday Express in the aftermath of last year's terrorist attacks suggesting a link between Osama bin Laden and the Channel Island jurisdiction has been disproved.
The article, published in October 2001, and entitled 'Bin Laden Probe Eyes Guernsey Connection' suggested that a merchant bank located in Guernsey had links to a terrorist organisation. However, this was subsequently found not to be the case, and no other links to any of the names on the list issued by the US government have been found in the intervening year.
Speaking to the Guernsey Press, Financial Services Commission director-general, Peter Neville welcomed the news, but condemned the stereotypical representation of offshore finance centres in the media:
'It's a pity we do not get better press, but good news is not news,' he mused. 'The fact that there was no link bears out our own belief that the industry has a culture of compliance. But it would be wrong to be complacent.'
