Speaking at the opening of the European Foundation Forum on Thursday, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern announced that the Irish government's top two priorities over the coming months are the Nice referendum campaign, and addressing areas of concern within the budget.
RTE News reported last week that in a strongly pro-Europe speech, Mr Ahern urged Ministers to participate actively in the debate over EU enlargement when the Dail reconvenes this week.
With regard to government expenditure, the Taoiseach announced that spending is set to rise by some 14%. He explained that although resources may be redirected in some areas, there will be no spending cuts.
Also speaking at the forum's launch, RTE revealed, was Tanaiste Mary Harney, who argued strongly for a Yes vote in the forthcoming referendum on the Nice Treaty, predicting that a rejection of EU enlargement will have profound consequences for the livelihoods of many.
Ms Harney then went on to accuse anti-Nice campaigners of offering Irish voters 'siren voices, wild-eyed warnings and red herrings'.
