According to a report in the Royal Gazette, the independence debate is likely to re-emerge onto the political radar now that an in depth study of the issue by the ruling Progressive Labour Party has been completed.
Premier Alex Scott in March asked the then PLP chairman Neville Tyrell to "set in motion the relevant committees that will see the party begin discussion on the subject." The Gazette reported this week Tyrell has now completed extensive consultations with the party membership and has handed in a report to Mr Scott.
“We’ve characterised it as a way forward document, an outline on the procedures. It is not a position paper,” party spokesman Scott Simmons was reported as saying.
“I believe that the way forward will be satisfactory to our membership,” he added.
Meanwhile, a report on how the government should progress with independence has also been submitted by the Deputy Premier Ewart Brown.
