July's tourism figures revealed drops in US air arrivals and hotel bed nights which were thought to be due to a lack of attractive packages. The Island needs to be more competitive. New initiatives designed to boost tourism, to attract young Bermudians into the hospitality industry, and to smooth the path for prospective investors are underway. The new moves were introduced after the third meeting between hotel owners and Government since the PLP came into power in November. Regular meetings are planned for the future between hotel proprietors, government representatives and union officials. Joint marketing for the Island will dovetail hotel advertising with Government campaigns. A "first point of contact" will act as liaison, helping investors navigate their way through Government processes. Additionally, decisions will be made without delay in areas such as immigration, planning and union involvement. A kit with video and instructions will be available to potential investors as well as a website.
