The Bermuda independence lobby is set to push ahead this year with renewed efforts to introduce a bill for a referendum on independence in the next parliamentary session, in spite of the absence of government support.
Although the ruling Progressive Labour Party has had independence in its charter for over 30 years now Premier Jennifer Smith says that it is not on her government's agenda at the moment.
The most vocal spokesperson for the Bermuda independence movement is Progressive Labour Party member Phil Perinchief who, following the failure of his own party to support his proposed bill, is now looking further afield for allies in his quest to get an independence bill tabled in the Bermuda parliament.
In a recent interview Mr Perinchief said he would now look to the rival United Bermuda Party for support for the bill. Mr Perinchief said "I have not yet found a parliamentarian or senator with the proverbial 'testicular fortitude' to introduce the Bill - I expect that by March someone in the UBP ranks would have the political acumen to introduce the bill . . . I think it would be a shrewd political move on the part of the UBP to table it. The effect of a split within the governing party will be far reaching for the Opposition."
