In a newspaper article published earlier this week, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi revealed that he is considering stepping down as leader and forcing a general election unless his governmental allies agree to tax cuts.
Writing in the conservative Il Foglio newspaper, Berlusconi hinted that the final decision on tax cuts may ultimately have to be made by the Italian people themselves.
"If taxes are reduced in a consistent and clear way, then the (government's) run continues. Otherwise, word must get back to Italians so that they can decide their destiny," Berlusconi wrote.
Tax cuts formed a major part of Berlusconi’s economic policy when elected in 2001, and they have been delayed for three years now whilst the government set about putting its fiscal house in order.
The Prime Minster has until November 29 to settle the matter in order to allow the measures to be included in the 2005 budget.
