Belize’s House of Representatives has voted to approve the Caribbean court of Justice Bill.
Requiring a two-thirds majority, the bill passed last month in a 21-8 vote split along party lines.
The bill enables the CCJ to hear trade cases within the ambit of the Caribbean Single Market Economy (CSME). It also allows the court to pass down rulings on trade issues covered in the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas.
The CCJ replaces the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council as the court of last instance for members of Caricom and will also serve as an appeal court in both civil and criminal cases from common law courts in these member states.
