After ratifying the EU Accession Treaty that will see ten new states join the European Union next year, the Belgian Foreign Minister Louis Michel stated that his government was convinced that Cyprus’s EU accession would greatly assist a peaceful settlement on the island.
The ratification followed a debate on Europe in the Belgian Senate which highlighted the problem of incorporating a divided Cyprus into the EU. Referring to Turkey, the Foreign Minister explained that the Belgian position was governed by the Copenhagen criteria that countries fully adopt the acquis communitaire.
Meanwhile, Senator Francois Roelants du Vivier also expressed the view that Cypriot accession would greatly enhance the prospects of a settlement, though added that the Turkish government held a large responsibility in advancing this settlement.
