Belgium’s tax amnesty on undeclared foreign assets is expected to add around EUR300 million in revenues to the government's coffers, a source close to Finance Minister Didier Reynders revealed in a report earlier this week.
While the amount is considerably lower than the EUR850 million projected by the government at the start of the year-long amnesty, it is nevertheless better than the finance ministry expected after a lack of initial interest produced poor returns for the scheme.
"During the month of December, there should still be around 200 million euros to come in," newspaper De Standaard reported on Wednesday, citing the finance ministry source.
The Belgian tax amnesty allows citizens to disclose their previously undeclared assets held abroad without facing criminal sanctions, in return for paying a tax of between 6% and 9% on the declared funds.
According to Reuters, Belgians hold around EUR160 billion in foreign accounts.
Official figures concerning the scheme are due to be published in February.
