Barclays Appoints New Legal Chief

It emerged this week that following a long, and often fraught search, Barclays has appointed a new legal chief.

Clifford Chance finance partner, Mark Harding will be replacing Howard Trust, who announced last year that he planned to leave the bank.

Although several high profile names were linked to the role, the bank's hunt for a new general counsel took more than nine months, and according to reports, caused 'huge internal fights' over the nature of the role.

Speaking in April, when it was announced that a shortlist of four likely candidates for the role had been drawn up, a Barclays spokesman explained that:

'We have been very thorough and methodical about the process, which means it has taken a long time, but we are on schedule to make an announcement at the end of the month.'
