Barbados Launches New E-Commerce Web Site

Babados' most recent e-commerce enterprise was launched last week with the optimistic words of Reginald Farley, Minister of Industry and International Business, who has great hopes for Barbados' e-commerce future.

Mr Farley hailed the web site, www.shopatbarbados.com, as 'the first e-commerce initiative launched in Barbados for Barbadian products,' and he expressed the hope that the web site would go a long way in solving some of the problems Barbadians currently experience while selling their products in overseas markets. All too often, he explained, many Bajans signed contracts with people overseas, who in turn do not honour their agreement to assist the products in penetrating the particular market.

The Minister urged manufacturers to reassess the products they offer in overseas markets to ensure that they are competitive in both quality and price. In addition, he encouraged them to study markets to determine what is in demand in order to effectively market their products or enter new areas.

He also said that he would like to see the web site promote non-manufactured items like music, art and other services to complement its existing services of supplying Barbadian products from ethnic foods like seasonings and condiments to craft made of wood, wire, ceramics and glass. 'ShopatBarbados.com has the capacity to become a major gateway for the flow of Barbadian products and services all over the world,' he said.
