Speaking at the recent launch of the Barbados Chapter of Investment Professionals, the President of the fledgling organisation, Glenn Cheong expressed pleasure at the positive response from the jurisdiction's finance professionals towards the establishment of such an organisation.
Mr Cheong outlined that Chapter's mission as being to 'advance the interests of Barbados' investment community and to maintain the highest standards of professional excellence and integrity', and explained to those attending the meeting that:
'A natural extension of our mission and objectives is that we would increasingly want Barbados promoted as an international destination which has a wealth of human resources in the investment management field, and which can therefore attract companies from wherever in the world, who seek to locate their offshore investment business in a country where they know they can employ well qualified people in this field.'
According to a Barbados Daily Nation report, the BCIP President acknowledged the progress that the jurisdiction has made since the creation of the Barbados Stock Exchange in 1987 and the introduction of local mutual funds nine years later, but suggested that Barbados has a long way to go before true capital market maturity is reached.
'Nevertheless, recent progress is pleasing and we would favour any governmental or private sector initiatives which seek to further advance the development of local and regional capital markets,' he concluded.
