Special Envoy to the Barbadian Prime Minister, Senator Philip Goddard, spoke out during a service commemorating the victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York last week to re-affirm his government's commitment to work with the United States and the international community in the fight against terrorism.
Senator Goddard stressed that Barbados would continue to ensure that this country, its institutions and citizens were not used in any manner to facilitate the activities of terrorists or their organisations. 'It is an understanding that the fight against terrorism is a fight for the rule of law, human dignity, justice and freedom...the stance against terrorism must be vigourous, concerted and committed,' he said.
He acknowledged that the attacks had far reaching implications, with the impact on the global economy being felt almost immediately, particularly on small tourism economies such as those in the Caribbean region.
The tourism and captive insurance industries which form a significant part of the jurisdiction's offshore financial services industry, expect to be the worst affected. The tourist industry in Barbados is bracing for heavy losses, with stock prices plummeting in luxury hotel groups and airlines.
