Earlier this week it was announced that Barbados-based company Uniserv, an e-commerce solutions provider, had been acquired by US company CCS Information Technology. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Michael Armstrong, general director of CCS, stated in the Caribbean press that the Uniserv deal was a step towards the company's goal of providing major e-commerce solutions for Caribbean governments as well as regional companies.

Now CCS customers will be able to use the services of Uniserv which offers access to the products and services of North American companies such as Sterling Commerce, CheckFree Corporation and XcelleNet, all of which are respected businesses in e-commerce software, remote management systems and automated payment processes.

Mr Armstrong added: 'CCS will provide e-commerce solutions, including the software and services, that will lower costs for our customers, make them more competitive in an increasingly globalised market and allow them to provide their customers with quicker, more efficient service.'

In addition to the acquisition of Uniserv, CCS also intends to realise its goal with the creation of Solutions, an e-business branch of the company which will be managed by former Uniserv President Joan Price. In explaining the need for Solutions, Ms Price said: 'We are offering our clients network products and services which would allow them to electronically execute transactions and enable computer applications to communicate directly with each other, leading to greater efficiency and lower handling costs.'

She continued: 'Government departments and businesses would be able to use leading-edge technology for the complete sales cycle, from purchasing to settlement of invoices. Our aim is to provide the platform that would allow the region to easily reap the benefits to be derived from electronically transacting business.'

CCS was established in 1980 and is a subsidiary of the Neal and Massy Group in the US. As a major IT solutions provider, CCS boasts the widest geographic coverage for IT services with operations in Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Jamaica and the Eastern Caribbean.
