According to the Law Zone news service, the Bar Council recently issued a report which recommended that UK Lord Chancellor, Derry Irvine should lose the right to appoint High Court judges and QCs.
'The report has concluded that the continued system of patronage wherein the appointment of members of the judiciary (is) by a member of the government is 'politically unacceptable,' Law Zone revealed.
The Bar Council reportedly expressed concerns as to the increasing politicisation of the judiciary, and attempts to 'bend it to doing the political will of the government'.
In order to combat this, the study urges the appointment of senior judges and QCs by an independent panel, which, it argues, is more democratic and modern than the current 'behind the scenes' approach.
