Speaking at a press conference last week, German Chancellor Angela Merkel raised the prospect of a 'privileged partnership' between the European Union and the Balkan states as opposed to full EU membership, causing concern in the countries being discussed.
Speaking following a meeting with Slovenian Prime Minister, Janez Jansa in Berlin, Ms Merkel announced that:
"For my side I'd like to say that we do not have to avoid the notion of privileged partnership," according to the DTT-NET news service.
She went on to add:
"The question of full membership is not the next question. It is rather about political stabilization."
This wavering on the part of the German Chancellor is likely to worry the governments of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, and Serbia and Montenegro.
According to the EU Observer, at a recent meeting of EU foreign ministers, the Balkan states pushed for "EU membership as ultimate goal" to be included in an EU statement on its aims for the region.
