Chinese search engine, Baidu announced this week that it will appeal a recent court verdict which found that it had assisted in the infringement of copyright.
Baidu is currently being sued by EMI, Sony, Universal, Warner and their local subsidiaries, which allege that the search portal made it easy for internet users to illegally download copyrighted content via its MP3 search engine.
Ruling on September 16, the Beijing Haidan District People's Court found in favour of another plaintiff, Shanghai Busheng, and ordered Baidu to pay 68,000 yuan in compensation.
In a statement released this week, however, the online search firm's legal team announced that:
"We believe that the district court order was based on a misunderstanding of the search engine technology and therefore is without merit. We will vigorously appeal on behalf of our client."
