Bahamian business has been urged by the Chamber of Commerce to increase its awareness of the issues surrounding tax reform and the economic effects of alternative tax systems at a forthcoming seminar.

"We want to sensitise people to the fact that they need to become more involved in the various processes we are going through," President of the Chamber of Commerce, Winston Rolle announced at a press conference.

"It is prudent to increase dialogue on such topics and in a non-prejudiced manner with emphasis on a tax system that would further encourage national development and investment in the country," observed Mr Rolle.

The seminar, to be held on October 7, will focus on a number of issues, but especially on the country’s need to maintain tax revenues whilst abolishing trade tariffs as part of regional trade liberalisation.

Guest speakers at the seminar, organised in conjunction with the Economic-Commercial Section of the US Embassy, will include Paulos Dos Santos, Tax Advisor for CARTAC (Caribbean Regional Technical Assistance Centre); Kelvin Dalrymple, Chief Country Economist of the Caribbean Development Bank; Ben Arrindell, Managing Partner of Ernst & Young, Barbados and Dr Charles McCLure, Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University.
