Caribbean Crossings Ltd (CCL) has been awarded a telecommunications license from the Bahamas Public Utilities Commission (PUC) to offer bulk telecommunications transmission capacity for data and Internet services. With a new submarine fibre-optic cable system, CCL can securely link the Bahamian islands of Grand Bahama, New Providence, Eleuthera and Abaco to the United States. The link between the US and Grand Bahama is now up and running and the New Providence link is expected to be operational before the end of this month.

Mr Phillip Keeping, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Caribbean Crossings Ltd., told the Bahama Journal that the Bahamas now has the ability to move into the 'Digital Age' with a world class Internet access that adheres to strict international standards . 'We believe this new digital bridge, which links The Bahamas major centres and the United States, will succinctly bring more jobs for Bahamians and reduced Internet access rates for all classes of users consequently, catapulting the country into a leadership position in the race toward global access within the Caribbean Region,' he said.

A delighted Mr Richard Pardy, President of CCL, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cable Bahamas Ltd, explained: 'This is the first telecommunications license issued by the PUC and is a significant milestone in our providing Bahamians with a choice in the provision of telecommunications services.'
