The business community in the Bahamas has come out in force to support the country's burgeoning e-commerce sector, according to a report in the Nassau Guardian.

Local businesspeople and experts expressed a desire to follow in the footsteps of the country's financial sector, which is now primarily electronically driven.

'E-commerce is a great way to increase productivity here in the Bahamas,' explained Daniel Thompson, business lecturer at the College of the Bahamas School of Business. 'E-commerce can be a system used by sectors such as agriculture, as a means of linking up to manufacutring outlets for the purposes of marketing their products.'

However, Mr Thompson also observed that there is a need for more training resources and facilities in order to turn the entire community onto the idea of doing business over the internet.

Also speaking to the Nassau Guardian was Monte Hanna, the president of a certification computer school in the Bahamas. He supported Daniel Thompson's calls for increased resources for the sector, stressing that greater investment is necessary if the jurisdiction is to continue its progress towards becoming an e-commerce hub.

'We're a tourist destination, therefore we have a centre for training in the area of tourism, we have a banking centre, so we have a banking class, so then, we also need to have a centre for e-commerce training,' he argued.
