According to the Island Sun local newspaper, speaking at the most recent sitting of the Legislative Council (LegCo), BVI Communications and Works Minister, Paul Wattley warned that incumbent telecommunications provider, Cable & Wireless must prepare itself for competition when its 40-year monopoly expires in 2007.
Arguing that it would be unacceptable for the firm to impede the development of the British Virgin Islands' telecoms sector in the interest of its own bottom line, the Minister urged the firm to begin streamlining its operations in preparation for cooperation and co-existence with competitors.
He went on to add that the rapid pace of technological development is making it increasingly difficult for lawmakers to keep up, but expressed the hope that by 2007, there will be adequate legislation in place to facilitate the creation of a level playing field in the newly liberalised telecoms sector.
The Island Sun went on to quote Mr Wattley as acknowledging the committment by Cable & Wireless to assist in the process of liberalisation. He additionally revealed that an external expert will be visiting the jurisdiction in the next month to start the process.
