BT Group announced last week that it has reached an agreement with the UK's telecoms regulator, Ofcom which will allow it to avoid being broken up into retail and wholesale operations.
Ofcom launched a probe into the firm's practices following complaints from rival telecoms firms that BT Retail receives preferential treatment from its wholesale operation.
Chief among the pledges made by BT, full details of which will be published later this week, was an undertaking to create an Access Services unit to provide other telecommunications providers with equal access to its 'local loop' or nationwide local network.
Speaking to reporters following the announcement, BT's chief executive, Ben Verwaayen welcomed the agreement, which means that the case will not now be referred to the European Competition Commission, announcing that:
"We have a very clear set of arrangements now in the settlement and I think this is good news for everybody."
He continued:
"These have been very tough negotiations, but they are fair. Everybody understands now that their business plan has the certainty that is needed."
