The Brazilian government has announced that it will suspend a quarter of its 2009 budget in order to try and keep within its spending targets for the year.
The plan will see around BRL37bn (USD16bn) of the government's fiscal spending postponed until March of this year in order for officials to try and ascertain how much impact the current economic slowdown is having upon tax revenues.
Figures have already revealed that tax revenues for 2008 have posted a decline on previous years, which is thought to be the first official decline since 2004.
It is normal practice for Brazil's government to freeze a portion of its budget each year; a move which is used to help service the country's debts.
