The British Phonographic Industry revealed at the weekend that it is biding its time over the issue of peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing, but that it has not ruled out the possibility of taking legal action against end users like its American counterpart, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
Although the BPI has no immediate plans to follow the RIAA's example, a spokesman for the organisation told the Vnunet news service on Sunday that when the new European Union copyright directive is implemented later this year, it may consider moving against file sharers.
'People have this perception of P2P users as poor students, but there are some people who download seriously large amounts of files,' he explained, adding that:
'While it is not our intention to sue it is not something we would rule out once the directive is enforced. The heavy users are the ones we would go after.'
