The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) is conducting an investigation into online retailer, Amazon.com, it emerged earlier this month.
According to reports, the BPI suspects that Amazon.com (although not its operation, Amazon.co.uk) may have been purchasing CDs from wholesalers outside of the European Economic Area (EEA) in order to sell them at reduced prices to UK customers, a process known as parallel importing.
However, speaking to Reuters, BPI spokesman, Matt Phillips sought to downplay the importance of the probe, explaining that:
"This is a standard routine. We look at many websites to determine if the product is legitimate." However, he added that:
"If we find a net retailer is importing music from outside Europe, then they are infringing copyright law."
The UK music industry body has already taken action against two online retailers, Play.com and CD-Wow, over parallel importing. CD-Wow is set to go before the courts in February.
