UK-based business and risk management training and conference organiser, Business Forums International (BFI) has warned that employers without an official policy on SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) are exposing themselves to potential legal action.
Speaking at a BFI policy briefing last week, the People Management news service quoted employment lawyer, Jan Lucas as warning that the worldwide outbreak of the disease has created a legal minefield.
Ms Lucas cited unfair dismissal claims from employees in affected areas forced to take unpaid leave, and contractual and health and safety disputes over travel policies and staff welfare as key areas from which legal action could conceivably arise.
'Companies cannot force staff to stay in affected regions, even for essential operations. Employers need to write up clear policies on this, and many have not yet done so,' she concluded.
