The Azerbaijani Parliament met last week to discuss several bills set to go into effect next year as part of the 2009 budget.
A five year extension to agricultural tax reliefs was discussed without definitive conclusion. The Parliament also agreed to adopt a revision to the Bill on Subsistence Levels to fix payments at AZN60. Also under discussion were social assistance benefits, and MPs underscored the importance of taking steps to ensure payments were better targeted to those most in need.
Speaker Ogtay Asadov said that the bills would be put to a vote at the next regular meeting of Parliament, and that the government would reconsider the draft budget, taking into account the suggestions made by MPs, and re-submit the budget blueprint to Parliament in 15 days.
Within the current draft of the budget, revenues are projected to rise 16.1% to AZN12.177bn (USD15bn, 27.9% of GDP) with expenditures expected to increase by 1.4% to AZN12.355bn (28.3% of GDP).
