Austria’s Finance Minister Josef Pröll has announced that the country’s new value-added tax (VAT) refund system, enabling the automated refund of sales tax, is now available on the government’s website “FinanzOnline”.
Pröll welcomed the introduction of the new VAT refund system, emphasizing that it marked yet another step forward in relieving the burden on businesses.
According to Pröll, the simplified process not only reduces administrative costs for businesses, but also saves both time and cost for the tax administration.
By developing the new system via FinanzOnline, considered one of Austria’s most successful and innovative e-government applications, the government has been able to produce the system at low cost, Pröll added.
As from January 1, 2010, all European Union (EU) member states are required to offer the new EU VAT refund procedure for automated sales tax refunds. Austria had successfully completed its test pilot by the end of September 2009.
Launched in 2003, FinanzOnline has significantly benefited Austrian taxpayers by reducing costs, saving time, increasing transparency, and by promptly issuing tax assessments, according to the government.
