Austria’s Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister Josef Pröll has vehemently rejected recent calls to introduce new taxes.
Defending both his position and the position of his political party, the Österreichische Volkspartei (ÖVP), or Austrian People’s Party, Pröll maintained that the introduction of new taxes would merely emit the wrong signal to the nation, at a time when the 2009 tax reforms have only just begun to reduce the burden on taxpayers, and when a faint glimmer of hope of an economic recovery has only just begun to emerge.
Pröll’s remarks follow recent suggestions made by the Minister of Trade and Commerce and fellow ÖVP member Reinhold Mitterlehner that the introduction of a wealth tax as a new source of revenue could not be ruled out.
Despite a growing budget deficit and rise in public debt, Pröll nevertheless maintained that the budget was not open to renegotiation.
The budget will be examined in the National Assembly in May.
